Payroll, Benefits & Tax in Slovakia

  • Average salary in Slovakia is 17,000 Euros per year.
  • Employer Tax in Slovakia is usually estimated at 35.2%, including:

  • Employee Tax in Slovakia is incremental up to 25%:
    • Income Tax is at a flat rate of 19% for the income up to 37,165 Euros of annual income,
    • Income Tax then steps to 25% for the income in excess of 37,165 Euros.
  • Overtime Payments in Slovakia is not mandatory and can eithe rbe included in the employment agreement or converted into days off. The normal weekly hours are 40 hours.

  • Notice period is depending on the length of service of the employee in the busines
  • Maternity Leave in Slovakia is up to 34 paid weeks. The Mother has to take 6 weeks before the birth date and the rest after the birth of the child. During this time, leave is paid at 75% by the Social Security Fund.
  • Paternity Leave is up to 28 paid weeks. 6 weeks have to be taken right after the child’s birth. The rest of the allowance can be taken (in maximum 2 periods) until the 3rd birthday of the child. The salary during those weeks will also paid at 75% by the Social Security Fund.
  • Parental Leave is up to 3 years in Slovakia during which the employee will be receive 275.90 Euros per month.
  • Sick Leave is covered for up to 52 weeks. The employer will pay 25% of the salary during the first 3 days then 55% during days 4 to 10. After this, it will be covered by the social security at 70% of base salary.
  • Statutory Leave is 20 days minimum per year up, or 25 days if the employee is over 32 years of age
  • Bank holidays: there are 15 national days in 2023 in Slovakia

The Slovakian Labour Code is setting the framework for employment in Slovakia. This covers all individual and collective working relationships, Compensation and Benefits, Workers rights as well as Leave (Sick, Parental), employment Termination and Discrimination.

Onboarding and Termination in Slovakia

  • Probation period are not mandatory under Polish Labour Law
  • Probation period in Poland however can be of a maximum of 3 months or 90 days, and therefor cannot be extended
  • You can hire through Fixed Term Contracts, Indefinite / Permanent contract or BtoB contracts
  • Employment Contracts are drafted in Polish but can also be in English (but then has to be both as the same time)
Termination in Slovakia
  • Termination is Slovakia is generally a straightforward process if all steps are respected and followed. In order to be compliant, Termination can occur as such:
    • By mutual agreement,
    • By resignation of the employee,
    • By expiration of contract,
    • By the employer on grounds of disciplinary dismissal, failure to perform in probation period, Objective grounds.
  • The minimum notice period for the employer in Slovakia is 30 days (for service of less than 12 months), then 60 days for service of 1 to 5 years, and then 90 days over this. Notice for the employee is 30 days in the first year then 60 days.
  • Severance payments in Slovakia are mandatory and can go from 1 month (first 5 years of employment) to 2 months salary depending on the length of employment.
